2014 NZ Secondary Schools Slalom & Freestyle Champs

Central Otago Whitewater, the Southland Canoe Club and Dunstan High School, as event hosts, invite you to come along to a wonderful week of paddling in the Southern region.

The NZ Secondary Schools Whitewater Champs is the pinnacle event for many junior whitewater kayakers. Secondary school students from all over NZ will be joined bythe Australian junior development squad to contest the various kayak and canoe slalom, DR and Freestyle events.

This is not only an opportunity for our top paddlers to compete against one another but also for those just starting into the sport to have a positive experience on an ideally suited river.

The NZ Secondary Schools Whitewater Champs will be held on the Monowai River near Borland Lodge in the heart of Southland. This is a grade 2 controlled river surrounded by native bush and located close to the Fiordland mountains. The site is approximately 2km from Borland Lodge and is accessible by large vehicles. This is a very remote location with marginal cell phone coverage, the nearest facilities are Te Anau/ Manapouri 40 minutes drive away.

Events will include slalom for both boys and girls K1, C1, C2, teams events and a DR sprint.

Saturday the 22nd will be practice day. Sunday and Monday will be slalom followed by the DR race on Tuesday. Following on from this the NZ Secondary Schools Freestyle event will be held at the Hawea Whitewater Park on Wednesday the 26th March.
After the NZ Secondary Schools Whitewater Champs conclude The NZ Canoe Slalom and Freestyle Nationals event (Thursday 27th - Sunday 30th March) will be held on the Hawea River and it is hoped you will stay to join us for this event.
